Atlanta is also considered the largest city, followed by Augusta, Columbus, Savannah, Athens, Macon, Roswell, Sandy Springs, Albany, and Johns Creek.

Famous towns and cities in Georgia include Savannah where the state’s founder, General James Edward Oglethorpe, first landed. It is also where the annual event, Masters Golf Tournament, is held during the first week of April. Gainesville is located along the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is known as the chicken capital of the world because of large poultry processing plants located in the city. In Gainesville, eating chicken with a fork is considered illegal.

Rome, on the other hand, was built on seven hills with rivers flowing in between these hills. The city was founded in 1834, and officially became a city in 1835 through the Georgia Legislature. Its name was derived from the famous city of Rome in Italy. The city has a lot of historical monuments and business establishments, which greatly contribute to the city’s economy. The city is also famous for its highly-equipped medical facilities like Redmond Regional Medical Center, Floyd Medical Center, and Harbin Clinic. Among Rome’s famous destinations include the Floyd County Courthouse; and the Clock Tower, which is located on one of Rome’s seven hills.

Just like Rome, Athens was also named after the famous city in Greece, Athens, the home of famous philosophers like Plato and Aristotle. It became a town officially in December 1806. Athens houses the University of Georgia, which paved way for the discovery and existence of this town. Also considered a hip city, Athens has about 100,000 residents in a land area of approximately 120 square miles.

Milledgeville was once the capital of Georgia, from 1804 to 1868. Located about 100 miles southeast of Atlanta, Milledgeville only has a population of about 19,000. It is home to a couple of historical sites like Governors Mansion which was built in 1839 and houses Georgia’s chief executives; and State Capital building, which was built in 1807, and is considered the first public building constructed in the United States.

Bogart, on the other hand, is a small town that lies in the northeastern region of Georgia, with a population of just about 1000. The Northeast Georgia Mountains are among Bogart’s natural attraction, the elevation of which reaches approximately 4784 feet, and is considered as Georgia’s highest point. The world famous Appalachian Trail, which stretches up to 2,000 miles, starts in these lush mountains. Despite Bogart’s small size, it still houses a number of fine restaurants, shopping malls, movie theaters, and large chains of stores as well as museums and parks. It also has medium-sized industries that provide employment to its residents.

Georgia, named after England’s King George II, is located east of the Mississippi River, and is considered one of the largest states in that area, along with Florida, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
